Store out of the rain in a dry airey place
Freshly harvested wood contains a naturally high amount of water (65-90% depending on the species). Removing the water is known as seasoning, and only “seasoned logs” with water content of below 20% should be used on woodburning stoves. Burning non-seasoned, damp or wet logs lowers the stove’s temperature, decreases the efficiency, blacks up glass viewing panels, creates excess soot and tar, and causes smokey chimneys. In the short term, the risks of blocking the flue ways or causing a chimney fire are greatly increased.
Seasoned hardwoods sourced from local sustainable British woodlands are economically and environmentally the best buy. For greatest fuel efficiency and minimum stove and flue problems, keep in a dry airy store before use.
Only dry clean timber and other authorised fuels are permitted to be burned in DEFRA approved stoves. Using painted, tanalised or any wood treated with fungicides, insecticides or other preservatives is prohibited by law.
Commercially produced low cost moisture meters are now readily available and these should be used to check the quality of any logs supplied.

We are an independent Birmingham based family business with over 25 years experience in the specialist fields of woodburning stoves, fires, flues, and chimneys.
