Eco-technology and multifuel stoves
Coal burns best on a raised cast iron grate with air being drawn through it. Multi-fuel stoves (those capable of burning both wood and smokeless coal) normally incorporate this feature, with the lower air intake providing the necessary air supply into the heart of the fire, ensuring a clean efficient burn.
The high efficiency levels (70%-82%) and low smoke emissions from a DEFRA stove exempt the stove from those banned under UK Clean Air Act (1993), enabling it to be legally used for burning both fuels in designated smoke control areas.
Normal house coal is unsuitable for burning in DEFRA approved multi-fuel stoves, but all manufacturers readily state approved smokeless fuels in their operation manuals.
